Go see Pina. It’s a natural excuse for a Friday dinner and movie date night. Incredibly moving documentary about the legendary German choreographer and dancer – Pina Bausch. It was amazing to see how she evoked every emotion on the spectrum in a single dance as the film explores some of her most famous works and the transformative way in which she conveyed male-female relationships. Pina was originally involved in creating the documentary in partnership with Director Wim Wenders, but sadly unexpectedly died of cancer two days before shooting was planned to begin for the film. Wim was ready to quit, but her dancers insisted in continuing to make the film and truly dance in her honor. So throughout the film, each of her company dancers is profiled in unique silhouettes where they dance for Pina. The dances are intensely emotionally and visually stimulating as many of the pieces are juxtaposed in very urban or rural settings striking an unexpected level of intensity – it’s like you are in the dancer’s body feeling their pain, joy, bliss, and struggle as they move in the chaos of the city, countryside, cafe, pool, empty warehouse, sand dunes. Pina very cleverly utilized the natural elements of water and earth, particularly her Full Moon piece where the dancers are coming in and out of water on stage. It was also very cool to see how the Director included interviews of the dancers and shared pieces of Pina’s life and dance through embedding old footage in the film. It’s an absolutely beautiful film – I wish I could describe the film as it deserves. So enough talking…grab dinner and a glass of wine and make it a night at the movies.
